Rector’s Message - June 2023

Kia ora koutou

Since our last newsletter the school has experienced a real tragedy. Ben Morresey, a Year 12 student, recently passed away. His funeral was heartbreakingly sad, but he was given a wonderful farewell. He was an extremely likeable young man and will be missed by the whole school community. He will be especially missed by his great mates from Thomas House and the surrounding rural areas. Our thoughts are with his parents and family.

Attendance has been down lately, due to viruses, colds and influenza. However, there hasn’t been much of Covid-19. Also, the industrial action by the teachers’ union has definitely disrupted learning and achievement. This Wednesday there is a Paid Union Meeting in the two periods after lunch. Hopefully this is the last interruption for a long time. We really need to get the boys back into the habit of full attendance and full achievement.

There are still 18 weeks to go (counting the holidays) before our Senior Prize Giving - more than enough time to turn things around. If you have a son in Years 11 to 13, ask him how his NCEA assessment work is going - what he’s passed and/or failed and what he needs to do to get his NCEA Certificate. An achievement team will be checking credit tallies and chasing up boys who are on the verge of drifting off from their goals.Feel free to email his form teacher or his class teachers if you want some information - their email addresses are on our website:

Winter Sport competitions are coming to the business end right now. A great piece of news is that the TBHS Football team received a wild card entry to the National Championship. Well done guys! The Hockey 1st XI are having another barnstorming season and will definitely be in the hunt for top honours at Rankin. All of our other Winter Codes are turning in some great performances as well.

See you at the joint TBHS/TGHS production of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ at Timaru Girls’ this week. It’s going to be great!

Nga mihi
