SI Athletic Champs - Christchurch 2026
A strong team of 15 athletes competed at the South Island Athletic Champs held in Christchurch over the weekend of Sat 28 - Sun 29 March.
Toby Winter had a very successful weekend, breaking the triple Jump record by over 50cm with a leap of 13.90m. This also ranks him second in the world in his age group. He also won the long jump with a distance of 5.96m and came third in the 100m with a time of 11.63 sec.
Rex Liu jumped a PB of 5.11m in the U16 Long Jump to finish in the top 10. He also competed well in the hurdles and high jump.
Finn Tregurtha-Nairn had a busy day with breaking a NZ record in his 200m division with a blistering time 24.87 sec. He also broke South Island records in the 400m (59.60 sec) and 100m (12.24 sec). He was also third in the long jump. Finn will be travelling overseas later in the year to compete at the Oceania Champs.
Jack Scoon gained second place in the U17 3000m in a time of 9.06.25 mins. He also ran well in the 1500m in a time of 4.22mins.
Jack Powell also had a busy weekend competing in the discus where he threw 32m. He gained a second placing in the 200m (24.03sec), and ran a PB of 11.89 sec in the 100m to get third.
Izak Kuperus jumped 1.50m in the high jump and threw well in the discus and shot putt.
In the under 15 grade, Connor Scoon gained a third in the 3000m. Matthew Innes also competed well in the 1500m and 3000m.
William Patterson gained 6th place in the U16 3000m and ran well in the 1500m.
Ronael Faalupega competed in three throwing events gaining a third placing in the shot putt. He also finished in the top 8 in the javelin.
Padriac Joines ran very well in the 800m and 1500m.
Isaac Park ran well in the 1500m.
Reuben McKeown competed well in the 3000m steeplechase.
In the U20 grade, Wilf Robinson ran a hard-fought 800m. He also raced in the steeplechase.
In the U15 javelin, Francois Le Roux finished first with a throw of 34.43m.
Overall, a very successful weekend.
