Timaru Boys’ is once again the premier schools’ hockey team in the country.
It was the second time in three years that they lifted the Rankin Cup and their third successive final. In this year’s final in Auckland they scored a hard fought 3-1 victory over New Plymouth Boys’. Winning all seven matches along the way they defeated Nelson College, Cambridge HS, Wellington College, Hamilton Boys’, St Andrews College, Westlake Boys’.
They have solidified themselves as one of the powerhouse secondary schools in New Zealand hockey. Head Coach, Simon Cooper [TBHS 2002-05] said ‘he was proud of the team’s efforts… they just believed in themselves’.
In the final Cooper said "It came down to which team wanted it more. I knew [ in the last quarter] we’d be able to turn it up a notch" So it proved! It was the second gold medal for Austin Gabites-Greenall and Flynn Brookland who were part of the winning 2023 side. Boston Mason, Mitchell Johnson and Ajay Caldwell followed in their old brother’s footsteps to pick up a gold medal of their own.
