Winter Tournament Wrap Up

An outstanding run of success at recent National tournaments, came to an end

this year in Dunedin. To highlight the small margins at this level, two 1 goal

defeats and a penalty shoot-out loss, relegated us to 21 st place out of 32 teams, at the premier National tournament. Similarly, the 2nd XI Hockey side up in Rotorua, were undefeated in pool play, but ended up 3rd of 4 teams on goal

difference. This saw them finish 6 th of 8 teams in the Galletly Shield, a

tournament featuring 2nd XIs from several very strong, mostly North Island

schools.

Our young Senior Basketball side had a good week at the 24-team South Island

tournament, held at the impressive new Parakiore Stadium in Christchurch. We

were able to win the key games, against the likes of Kings, Marlborough,

Waitaki and Otago Boys to make the Plate Final. We eventually went down

104-92 to St Thomas of Canterbury College in the final, to finish a creditable

10 th . Our junior side also played in the top South Island tournament at

Parakiore. They had a juxtaposition of some good wins and a couple of losses

to strong sides to end up 7 th of 16 teams.

Our 1 st XI Footballers trekked all the way up to Nelson, for the Tier two, Jim

Wishart Tournament. We were competitive all week, but a narrow loss to

Middleton Grange, put us out of top 4 contention. Pleasingly we rebounded,

with wins over Lincoln and Christ’s College, to finish in 5th position, at the 20-

team tournament. Our junior footballers again did not quite have the rub of

the green, at their 8-team, South Island invitational tournament. This included

a penalty shoot-out loss to St Bede’s, in the final play-off game for 7 th and 8 th .

The Colts Rugby boys played in a 10-team South Island Invitational

tournament, played at Linwood Rugby Club, in Christchurch. The team had a

mix of wins and losses throughout the week, and their 6 th place finish was a fair

reflection of both their ability, and standing, compared to the other teams. The

Under 16 team finished 3 rd in their quadrangular tournament in Christchurch.

The highlight for them, was a win over St Andrews College.
