Timaru take overall honours in Waitaki Exchange

This year’s winter exchange was held in Timaru in fine conditions on Wednesday the 24 th of August.

One of the highlights was the Senior Basketball game where TBHS jumped out to an early lead, that Waitaki clawed back to 76-75 with just over a minute remaining. A clutch 3 pointer from Jai Holden down the stretch was pivotal inTBHS’s eventual 81-75 win.

The 1 st XV match was played on a sodden School Park. Both sides took a positive approach given the ground conditions. Timaru always held an edge with their ball movement and driving play but Waitaki defended tenaciously for long periods and held the home side to a 10-0 half-time lead which wasextended to 27-0 by full-time. For the home side half-back Ned Milne and hooker Zach Parkin as they have been for much of the season were standouts,while year 11 loose forward Hamish Melville scored a fine individual try with a determined, barn-storming run. The two junior matches saw big wins for TBHS 83-14 and 67-19 for the Colts and Under 14 sides respectively.

Timaru also took out both the 1 st XI Football and Senior Hockey matches. The Footballers were dominant in a comprehensive 12-0 victory with Reece Burtenshaw and Pero Foreman both netting 5 goals apiece. The Hockey was more evenly contested but ended in a 2-0 score-line in Timaru’s favour. Both sides now head off to National Tournament. The Trap shooters earnt a close 304-291 win out at Levels to complete Timaru’s wins on the day. Waitaki’s highlights came via wins in Chess 8-4, Debating 249-248, Smallboreshooting 900-761 and Badminton on a points countback after the matches were tied 3 wins apiece. This saw Timaru take overall honours by 7 to 4.
