Parents and students may have seen the Office of Film and Literature Classification’s NZ Youth and Porn research which was launched in December and explores young people’s use and experiences of online pornography.
It is a valuable and timely contribution to the New Zealand ‘porn and young people’ conversation, indicating 67% of NZ youth aged 14-17 have been exposed to pornography, and 32% of boys and 23% of girls have seen it by the age of 12 or younger.
The Light Project has noticed that young people are keen to seek help. Their most popular website page over the past 3 months has been the ‘I need help’ page with a growing number of personal requests for help from youth and whānau. I am really keen to see help available to young people and ask you as parents to explore the website yourselves, and then encourage your son to check out the website www.thelightproject.co.nz
