Update from the Arts

Last month the senior drama students joined with students from the music program and went on its first trip of the year!

Piled into vans, we all drove up to Christchurch to see Peter Pan presented by the Forge Theatre. It was a fun filled evening of pizza and laughs, as we enjoyed the outdoor festival environment. This trip was the first of many, as the Drama Department intends on seeing the many shows New Zealand has to offer!

Right now the drama students are getting ready for their first internals, with the Year 11 and 12s working on Melodrama, and the Year 13s on Shakespearian monologues. The drama technology students are about to wrap up their set designs, and delve into theatrical set construction.

The year has started on a very positive note for Music. There has been a pleasing response to Itinerant music lessons and these are now progressing well. If unable to attend a lesson, boys are to notify Mrs Taylor so the time can be used for someone else.

The Arts trip to Christchurch in February provided a great opportunity for students in Drama & Music to combine the performance of Peter Pan was excellent and students were impressed with the up-beat tempo of the performance.

The Concert Band is performing well and has presented a programme in the Band Rotunda at the Gardens to an audience of parents and interested public. They also performed before Assembly as the classes entered and then played the National Anthem and School Song for Assembly. This worked well and was positively received.

Students from the school were appreciative of the opportunity to attend the RNZAF Band Concert held in the Theatre Royal on Wednesday 25 February and enthusiastically joined the standing ovation at the end!

Posters have arrived and the buzz to prepare for Rockquest on 5th June has commenced. Rock performers have had one meeting and Year 9 students who missed that but want to be involved are encouraged to speak with Mrs Taylor in the Music room. Lists are being prepared for Music Commission Workshops to support groups in their preparation.

Pipers and piping drummers are bound for Nelson with Scott Shannon and the Junior Pipe Band. Participating from Friday 13th to Monday 16th March to perform in the National Piping Championships, we wish them 'Good Luck” for this exciting event.
