In 2017 we are continuing to foster continual improvement of our students' Literacy. We ask that you ask about your son’s reading and encourage them to read regularly at home. The following are some recommendations from the Library that have been popular with Y9 and 10 students.
Holes by Louis Sachar
Stanley Yelnats' family has a history of bad luck, so when a miscarriage of justice sends him to Camp Green Lake Juvenile Detention Centre (which isn't green and doesn't have a lake) he is not surprised. Every day he and the other inmates are told to dig a hole, five foot wide by five foot deep, reporting anything they find. The evil warden claims that it is character building, but this is a lie and Stanley must dig up the truth.
Enemy Camp by David Hill
It's 1942, and the tiny farming town of Featherston is about to receive hundreds of Japanese soldiers into its prisoner-of-war camp. Ewen, whose dad is a guard there, can't stop wondering about the enemy just down the road. Some say the captives are evil and cruel and should be treated harshly - or shot. But when Ewen and his friends ride out to the camp to peep through the barbed wire, the POWs just seem like ...well, people. Then a new group from a captured warship arrives and the mood in the camp darkens. Guards and inmates begin to clash.
In Term 2 we have 19 students from Y12 that have volunteered for the Peer Reading Programmes we are running at Bluestone and at our own school on Thursdays. These students are definitely showing a commitment to the school values through being willing participants.
