Tennis leads the way at Otago Interschool

Tennis proved to be the big winner at the annual Timaru Boys’ High School Summer Sports Exchange held with Otago Boys’ in Timaru.

The tennis team won 12 games to nil as they shutout the visitors in a one sided contest.

This is a very strong Timaru team that only loses one player at the end of the year so they will look to improve their results next year. All players played well with James Watt and Ben Deeley leading the way for the juniors and Jack Deeley and Sam Benny leading the way for the seniors. A good result for the team with the promise of more positive results in upcoming exchanges.

Volleyball

The volleyballers had a good result despite having five seniors away at camp

and the National Rowing Championships. Cullen Grace was again a standout as Timaru shared the spoils with Otago Boys’ with a game apiece. Timaru lost the first game 3 sets to nil as they struggled to compete with the bigger and more physical Otago boys. Things came together in the second game with a 3–2 victory. This despite being down two sets to nil. Cullen was outstanding at the net with some power shots that Otago struggled to keep out.

Cricket

The 1st XI cricket were up against it again as they struggled to get runs onto the board. They did well to contain Otago to 220 in the first innings with Sean Wills taking 2–32 and Chris Hogan taking 3–45. However a poor batting display saw TBHS all out for 75 with Mark Otley scoring the majority of runs with 41. Otago went for quick runs in the second innings eventually declaring for 225–6, Mark Otley 3–69 and Josh Mehrtens 1–17. This left a target of 380 for Timaru. TBHS had an improved batting performance in the second innings but were still out for 150 with Chris Hogan scoring 69. The team has to learn to put partnerships together to build bigger more defendable totals.

The Colts cricket team also struggled against their southern opponents with a small score of 123 in their first innings. Despite the presence of a couple of senior players they were unable to make inroads into the opposition as they made 330–6 declared. Timaru improved in their second innings at bat as they made 190 with Jack Leslie 50 and Ben Stayt 43 the top scorers. A comprehensive victory for OBHS.

A win at the exchange for OBHS by 2.5–1.5.
