Aoraki Secondary Schools Archery Competition 17/5/16

Timaru Boys’ High School was again the proud host of the annual Aoraki Secondary Schools Archery Competition, held in Hogben Hall.

Five schools competed for the honour of the trophy, which is now in its third year of contention. Roncalli College, Waitaki Boys’ High School, Timaru Girls’ High School, Craighead Diocesan School and Timaru Boys’ High School put forward teams of five archers consisting of both junior and senior students.

Throughout the day students competed by shooting in three ‘rounds’. Each round consisted of shooting six ‘ends’, in which an archer will shoot six lots of three arrows into the target which is a distance of 10 metres away. It takes a steady eye, a strong arm and the ability to block out the competition in order to aim and shoot for the bulls eye.

Our team of James Bell, Thomas Bell, James Stevens, Dion Parlane, Reed Stevenson, Jordan Walker (Captain) and Benjamin Hargreaves (Reserve) shot consistently well throughout the competition, never sure of their placing until the third round’s conclusion.

At the end of the first round TBHS was 25 points behind TGHS. At the end of the second round the team remained 12 points behind TGHS. When the end of the third round was posted, TBHS had shot ahead by 41 points to take out the competition for the third consecutive year. A very strong finish indeed.

Archery at TBHS acknowledges the assistance of Wayne Garchow who has fostered the growth of this sport in the Aoraki region.
