On 8-9 July, Year 10 students Hayden Jefferson and George Guerin participated in the National TeenAg Grand Final, held in the South Canterbury District at a variety of locations including Caroline Bay and the Theatre Royal.
Earlier in the year George and Hayden received a second place at the Aorangi TeenAg finals in which 18 teams from the region participated. This result gained them a spot in the National Finals alongside fifteen other teams from across the country.
The boys had to participate in a variety of practical modules including reversing a motorbike with a trailer through an obstacle course, weighing and drafting sheep, as well as other activities from Southfuels, Beef and Lamb NZ and Dairy NZ to name just a few. The boys also had to complete a one hour exam written by a Lincoln University Lecturer and present a 2 minute speech on a topic given to the boys the night before.
The competition culminated with a ‘Race-off’ in which all teams completed various activities such as assembling a mailbox and other problem solving activities to complete the day’s itinerary. Points were given for each of the modules and the totals were tallied.
At the end of the day Hayden and George received top score in the Beef and Lamb module and successfully earned 7th place overall of the 15 teams – an outstanding effort for two Year 10 boys competing against mainly Year 12 and 13 students.
We watch with great anticipation as these two young men continue to work together to lift their achievements and gain knowledge and skills over the years to come. Well done George and Hayden.
