The TBHS Colts Football team won the inaugural South Island Under 15 Tournament after defeating King’s High School 4-2 in a penalty shootout after scores were tied at 1-1 at full time.
The final was played in glorious conditions on one of the artificial pitches at Logan Park in Dunedin. TBHS scored just after the break, before King’s scored 10 minutes later to even the match and it remained this way until full time. TBHS had a number of chances in front of goal and some near misses against a tiring King’s team. TBHS had beaten King’s in the first game of the tournament 5-2. To get to the final King’s had won two penalty shootouts, one against the highly favoured Otago Boys’ Year 10 team and then Marlborough College in the semi final. TBHS had had no shootouts. The first two penalties were evenly matched before two King’s errors saw the ball fly over the crossbar which left Lucas to seal the match with our fourth.
In the pool matches TBHS defeated King’s High 5-2, Shirley Boys’ 5-1 and a 2-3 loss to Otago Boys’ Year 9. TBHS finished top of the pool on a superior goal difference. Southland Boys’ was beaten 6-0 in the quarter final and then Christ’s College was defeated 2-1 in the semi final.
Thanks to the coach Nick Henderson who gave up his time to be in Dunedin from Sunday to Thursday, his work with the boys prior to the tournament, his thoughtfulness during matches and his organisation of everything else during the week.
