Tonga’s devastating Tsunami in early February no longer captures headlines. The reality of recovery is very much still before us.
The TBHS community has for years welcomed Pacific Island students and families. South Canterbury over the past two to three decades has embraced many Island families into our workforce and schools. TBHS has been a beneficiary.
The appointment of TBHS Old Boy Siaosi Sovaleni as the Prime Minister of Tonga is a proud day for the school. Siaosi had a fine final year at TBHS as a sportsman and academic. He was runner up to the dux and made an impact in the 1st XV. He went on to study at Auckland and Oxford (UK) Universities before returning home to Tonga. Siaosi was a CEO prior to entering Parliament. The Tsunami hit Tonga just 10 weeks after he became P M.
It has been proposed by the THSOBA Executive that we lend a hand to Tonga and Siaosi.
To that end we are setting up a TBHS Tonga Relief and Support Fund to go directly to the recovery in Tonga.
We are well aware that the tragic events in Ukraine have our attention at present but the impact of the Tsunami on Tonga does merit a helping hand.
Over the month of April donations for the Tongan Tsunami Relief Fund can be forwarded to the Timaru High School Old Boy’s Account: 06-0996-0517615-01
Please ensure you record: your name, and Tsunami in the reference section
The Executive is confident that a worth contribution will be forthcoming from the School and Old Boy Community
