It rained for three days before the Aoraki SS Cycling Championships, only ceasing at 8:00am on the day of the event.
The roadies had a clear day for racing before the rain again hit at 6:00pm – it was a great call by Sport Aoraki and Amy Hollamby to not postpone the day!
We arrived with fourteen cyclists and high hopes for the day. The first major placings of the day were 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the individual time trial to Hayden Jefferson, Sam Ritchie and Cathal Guiney respectively.
Our over-16s then rode the 20 km scratch race, helping Sam Ritchie across the finish line in second place, but they worked too hard throughout the race with the result that our competition who had fresher legs than our own boys, were winners on the podium. By the time they rode the team time trial, our top boys managed a second placing. This was good learning for all.
Well done to our under-16 riders Ollie Smith, Thomas Allan and Fletcher Joyce who took a 1st in their team time trial.
