What an exciting time we had in Week 7 this term from 16-18 June.
The Arts Extravaganza was a hit with the students, teachers and workshop tutors. It started on Wednesday with Tracy Johnson from Designer Cakes coming in to work for three mornings with a small group of boys to mould chocolate flowers. Day 1 saw our boys learn to ice a cake with ganache while Day 2 saw them learn to use fondant to finish their project on Day 3. The boys were all able to eat their creations or take them home although it is uncertain how many made it home!
Wood turning saw two small groups of enthusiastic boys challenge themselves with a new skill that saw them learning to use lathes. We would like to thank the Timaru Wood Turners Club and their members who came along and helped our boys create the most amazing wooden bowls in a day and a half.
Improvisation games were taken by local Abigail Austin and the School of Rock was ably taken by Megan Holden with Lee Parcell. This saw our boys taken through the basics of how to balance sound and set up a performance.
Calligraphy was taught by friend of the school Alison Gray. Her enthusiastic style made for an entertaining course.
Wes from TeAna Rock Art Centre arrived, and the boys created Maori musical instruments and a Maori strategy game. Wes has a great manner with the boys, and they appreciated his skills and knowledge.
KBB Music was on the scene to work with our boys on the audio desk in the Music room.
Approximately 30 boys visited the South Canterbury Drama League - most of them had never been to the theatre before, so it was a thrill to see them engage with the volunteers who run the lighting and sound as well as the people who do the “on stage” work.
Friday was a real learning curve for our Year 9 boys with an Acappella workshop overseen by NZ award winning singing quartet Promenade. We found much hidden talent amongst our students. This talented group also worked with our choir and within 40 minutes had 4-part harmony sailing through the Tait Block. They have promised to work with them again.
Staff members who assisted with leading workshops included Kelvin Furze, Cameron Gibb, Paul Bennison, Lee Parcell, Wayne Doyle and School Counsellor Tony Bunting.
All in all, we had 30 workshops with over 170 boys taking part and the majority of these young men participated in more than two workshops.
