Playing Grace Beatson's own composition '1940 Youth'. The Flying Shoes comprised of TGHS student, Grace Beatson (B♭ Cornet), Ryan Davis (Alto Saxophone), Caleb Nicolson (B♭ Bass) won four awards at the Chamber Music NZ Contest for the Timaru District held on 13 June at Hogben Hall.
This was an exceptional achievement for the group who competed with students from six other schools in the region. Their group was coached by Margaret van Ginkel (Brass Tutor). The contest was adjudicated by Douglas Beilman, member of the NZ Order of Merit for Services to Music.
The group won one of the four Highly Commended awards, the KBB Music Award for a group featuring Brass and Woodwind, the Best Performance of a New Zealand Work and the Best Performance of an Original Composition
The guitar ensemble of 2x4x6 Guitars consisting of Finley O'Connor, Aaron Freshwater, Isobel Whitticase, William Holland also performed credibly at the event. They are coached by Geoff Davidson (Guitar tutor) and included students from Craighead Diocesan and Geraldine High Schools.
