This Wednesday 6 July saw the introduction of the first day of a programme we are trialling for our Year 12 students.
It is broadly a 'life skills' course to be known as POWER Tools. The name and content reflect the Timaru Boys' High School PB4L programme, and future relevant knowledge and skills our students have indicated a desire for.
The boys completed five rotations during the day which covered the topics summarised below:
Money 101: Bank accounts, credit cards and hire purchase
Flatting 101: Setting up a flat, tenancy tribunal, case study
Tyres 101: Changing a tyre, car servicing basics
Money 102: Mortgages
Man dress 101: How to iron a shirt and wardrobe essentials
We were able to bring in outside knowledge and expertise with Don McFarlane from the Timaru Budget Advisory Trust, as well as make use of existing knowledge from school staff who have backgrounds in automotive mechanics, engineering and financial advice. Future possible content includes, but is not limited to, legal matters, job seeking, taxation, superannuation, insurance and men’s health.
Help Wanted!!
If you would be willing and able to contribute to our next POWER tools days in some way, we would like to welcome you as part of our school community to do so. Please contact Blair Poulter on 687 7560, extn 713 or (poulterbl@timaruboys.school.nz)
