Aoraki Cycling

Congratulations to a deserving TBHS Cycling team, winners of the Aoraki Cycling Championship held in Timaru on Tuesday in trying weather conditions.

Embarrassed organisers admitted on Wednesday that the counting of final points was inaccurate and Timaru Boys’ were winners of the event after initially having declared a draw with Mountainview. An apology from the organisers stated "It needs to be noted that Timaru Boys’ High have won the overall school trophy for the boys with 11 points while Mountainview High School finished with 9 points."

Hayden Jefferson took line honours for both the individual time trial and the 20 km scratch race. The seniors then had two podium finishes (Hayden Jefferson, Sam Ritchie, Cadell Tompkinson and Liam Barclay, Ronan Galpin, Josh Cameron) for the three man team time trial. The junior boys (Ollie Smith, Thomas Allan, Liam Harrison) also took 2nd place in their team’s time trial to give us a clear win on the day.

As the rain and hail poured down late afternoon, the tight corners became hazardous as the odd bike went down on the tarmac but our boys persevered to attain an exceptional result – for many of the boys, this was their first taste of competitive road cycling at the event. Well done to a great team!
