Timaru Boys’ came out on top of St Andrew’s College in its annual split inter-school of home and away fixtures, winning by eight victories to five with one draw in an even encounter in cool, damp conditions in both Christchurch and Timaru on Monday 11 June.
The highlights for Timaru included unbeaten runs in the Basketball and Football fixtures.
The Senior Basketball side without an injured James Watt and playing away from home, rallied from a 20 point deficit to record a 68-63 victory. This was helped by 26 points from Jack Crossan which included some impressive three point shooting and a determined defensive display led by Alvin Sutedja.
The Junior Basketball side also performed strongly in a 62-41 victory. Lincoln Preston, Kaleb Small, Corey Martin and Lucas Mullings were key performers for TBHS.
The young 1st X1 Soccer side recorded an encouraging 5-3 win in Timaru. Down 3-1, TBHS finished strongly on the back of a Tyler Cunningham hat-trick. Bram van den Bosch had a strong match as did captain Harry Pierce at the back, while Matt Rayward and Taylor Donaldson had good moments up front.
The 15th Grade side did well to overcome a strong STAC combination 2-1. Tane Francis was outstanding in goal for TBHS while goal scorers Pero Forman and Reece Burtenshaw along with Iggy Faeldin also performed well. Josh Goodwin, William Tudgey and Duncan Peterson were the best performers for the 14th Grade side in their one all draw in Christchurch.
The 1st X1 Hockey were well beaten 5-0 by a strong St Andrew’s side that is shaping up to potentially be the top side in Canterbury. They have their chance for revenge in two weeks in the Canterbury Schools’ Championship.
The 2nd X1 ground out a pleasing 3-1 win in Timaru on the back of two goals by Hamish Tayler. Josh O’Neill and Josh Earnshaw were quality performers for the home side.
The Senior rugby encounters were dominated by St Andrew’s College in Christchurch. The 1st XV game for the Williams-Milliken trophy was won emphatically by STAC 50-19. Numerous errors and some poor defence saw St Andrew’s run away with the game in the middle stages of the match. For TBHS. Shane Fikken, Ben Sands and TJ Lensley worked hard up front as did young Jack Pudney.
The 2nd XV game was won equally emphatically by the home side 55-0.
The remaining rugby fixtures in Timaru were played at Alpine Energy Stadium and Pleasant Point domain due to the state of School Park. A well drilled St Andrew’s side ran out 29-0 winners in the Under 16 game. Mavae Paongo and Leo Capener defended bravely for TBHS.
The two Junior games saw role reversals with TBHS dominant in both. The Colts were run away 67-0 winners in a strong team performance. Bede Fisher, Robbie Adams and Hamish Yeatman worked hard up front, while the hard running Hugh Cameron on the wing and half-back Ryan Allan were the best of the backs. The Under 14 side recorded a decisive 42-7 victory with Siaosi Moimoi, Harry Schmack and Toby Clemett playing starring roles.
A young TBHS Trapshooting team recorded a narrow 392-388 win in a good all round performance out at the Timaru club at Levels to round out the fixture list.
