Forget the Americas Cup in San Francisco in 2013 - the greatest sporting comeback in the history of sport happened right here at Timaru Boys’ High on Thursday 25 May.
The TBHS Prefects
were dominant for the majority of their annual football game held at lunchtime
on the Rectory Field; with quality flowing football and some well taken goals, the
Prefects found themselves 2-0 up at halftime.
After a rousing speech at halftime by Mr Sparrow, the staff finally settled into their groove and began to put some passes together to get themselves into a position to contest the match. Thore Barthel, our German International gap student was an integral part of the turnaround, with his tenacity and considerably higher level of fitness allowing him to get forward and create an opportunity of which Mr Bennison made no mistake about slamming into the back of the net, 2-1 to prefects.
The next segment of play had the prefects coming out firing before some brilliance from Thore to control the ball on his chest and rocket his half volley into the far corner of the net, 2-2, GAME ON!
The comeback was completed in the last seconds of the game when the ball was driven low and hard to the feet of Mr Bennison who, now an expert, buried the winner into the net for the staff to take one of their most unlikely victories. The comeback was complete!
