The final whistle has blown on what was a very successful season for Timaru Boys’ High Football both on and off the field.
We have had over 120 boys turning out for Timaru Boys’ High on a weekly basis, these boys made up seven different teams in four different grades.
The season has proved that there is excellent depth coming through from the junior grades with the two TBHS 14th Grade teams performing well during the season and showing excellent improvement as the season progressed. We were fortunate to come second in both the league competition and the end of season knock out competition. Thanks to Damian Gawne, Kevin McAleer, Roy Ford, Caleb Riley and Galli Templeton for their professionalism in coaching over the season.
The South Canterbury 16th Grade league was dominated by three TBHS teams this year: the Eagles, Falcons and Condors all acquitted themselves very well with a number of boys pushing for much higher honours in 2016. We were very fortunate to have the TBHS Eagles go through the season unbeaten and win the 16th grade competition. A huge thank you to Nick Reid, Chris Barclay, Oliver Prisk, Desmond Prisk, Ross Godwin, Jack Deeley and Max Pierce for their coaching contributions throughout the season; the boys appreciated their expertise and guidance.
Our TBHS 18th grade Hawks team clinched what was the most exciting league competition over the last few years with a win over St Kevin’s in the final round confirming that they are now the 18th Grade league winners and also the 18th Grade knock out cup winners.
Timaru Boys’ High also featured in the Youth Cup final where they faced a very physical Geraldine team. Timaru Boys’ played much finer football throughout the match but an inability to put the ball in the back of the net at crucial times eventually cost them the chance of winning the game. The boys went down 2-1 in the final minutes of the game.
The 1st XI had a very pleasing season, gaining an impressive 19 points in the local league and playing a very pleasant brand of football. They were one win away from gaining 4th place in the South Canterbury Men’s Division One Competition.
The 1st XI also travelled to the Rex Dawkins Tournament in Christchurch where they finished 10th out of 16 teams. They had two very strong teams in their pool and missed opportunities against Middleton Grange and Ashburton College sealed their fate. The boys learnt a lot from their experiences and this should hold them in good stead for next season. Special thanks to Steve Deeley who has orchestrated a number of positive changes during the season and is a well-respected Head Coach of TBHS Football.
A big thank you to both the boys, caregivers, coaches and managers who put in countless hours over the season, as without your support, we wouldn’t be able to enjoy the superb game of football.
All the best to those boys who are moving on at the end of the year; thank you for your contribution to Timaru Boys’ Football over the years and we wish you all the best for your future.
