The South Island Athletics was held in Timaru in the first weekend of April with near-perfect weather, ideal for Athletics.
TBHS had 22 Athletes who were selected from the Aoraki Sports but only 16 competed in the South Island Athletics. The team consisted of a mixture of seniors as well as juniors. This year TBHS had one relay team that qualified for the South Island Athletics in the Under 15 age group. They did extremely well making it to the final, but were unfortunately disqualified.
Our results were very good with most of the athletes achieving a personal bests, with several in the top 8 placings and finals.
The standout athletes were:
William Valentine who won the Under 15 Discus and was 6th in the Javelin, Thomas Valentine won the under 15 Hammer and was 7th in the Triple Jump, Hamish Stowell was 2nd in the Under 16 Long Jump and made the final of the 200m, Ben Sewell was 3rd in the under 15 Hurdles, Ronan Galpin was also 3rd in the Under 16 Hurdles.
All other Athletes performed very well a lot in the top 8 of their event. The Athletes were Hayden McNulty 6th in the Triple jump , George Guerin top 8 in the 1500m and 800m , Bailey Gebbie top 8 in the 1500m and 800m, Xavier Judd 6th in the triple jump top 8 in the hurdles, Michael Russell top 8 in the hurdles , Farran Landers 9th in the 3000m, Keroles Abousif 6th in the shot put, Ryan Lewthwaite personal best in the Javelin, William Rawlins competitive in the 200m, Jake Mason 7th place in the Long jump and 4th in the Triple jump, Sean Rhodes competitive in the Hurdles and Quinn Motley personal best in the Discus . These results are very pleasing and a lot better than last year.
The South Island competition will be held in Dunedin in 2017.
The South Island team of 2016 has shown they have the ability and the potential to be competitive at the Nationals at the end of the year.
