Congratulations to our students who recently participated in the annual Smokefree Rockquest regional final held at Mountainview High School.
Our indie rock/reggae quartet Jack's Point took not only the top prize, beating student bands from South Canterbury, Oamaru and Ashburton, but also the "People's Choice" award.
The band - comprising Roncalli College's Nick, and lead guitarist Billy Cook, 17, and Timaru Boys' High School's drummer Ben Roberts and bassist Jack McLennan, both 15 - won with original songs Falling into the Sea and Angels in the Sand. The band borrowed its name from a popular surfing spot at Timaru's Patiti Point which is being eroded by the advancing sea.
Congratulations also to Jemma Riddle, vocalist in the combined TGHS/TBHS band, who took top honours in winning the Smokefree Best Vocals award.
The next step for Jack's Point is to polish a couple more originals before filming themselves performing four songs with the aim of being selected for the competition's national final.
We wish them every success.
