Congratulations to Jonathon Smitham who competed in the Special Olympics Swimming Regional Games recently held in Greymouth.

Jonathon was extremely successful in the swimming events, winning a Gold medal in the 25m backstroke and Bronze placings in the 25m and 50m freestyle. Held over two days, the Special Olympics offer not only an environment of strong competition for athletes, but fun, friendships and team spirit; it’s about a feeling of belonging, and ultimately improving quality of life. Each year, Special Olympics New Zealand runs more than 200 events in over 40 towns and cities around the country. In the lead-up to National Games, athletes must participate in Ribbon Days and Regional Games.

Jonathon has another regional competition coming up in December in Dunedin and aims to compete in the National Games to be held in Wellington in 2017. We are very proud of his achievements.
