Basketball: South Island Premiership Tournament, Invercargill

By TBHS | Posted: Thursday September 27, 2018

Timaru Boys’ High School finished in 8th place in the South Island Premierships in Invercargill.

This has been the best result for many years, as this twenty four team event is always hotly contested. Only the top six teams advance to the National Finals in Palmerston North.

TBHS finished in 2nd place in their pool with wins over James Hargest College 82-64, John McGlashan College 92-79, Burnside73-68 , Marlborough Boys’ 81-59 and losing only to the eventual finalist, Shirley Boys’ 43-79 .

In the crucial quarter final against Middleton Grange, the team competed well but could not contain the well drilled Middleton team, losing 87-74.

Unfortunately TBHS lost their Captain and big man, James Watt to injury in the 3rd quarter against Middleton Grange. Without James’ presence near the basket, the last two games were going to be a big challenge. TBHS lost the remaining two games against St Andrew’s and Rangiora, but the young Timaru side can feel proud of their efforts this year, as they have been an exciting team to watch. Their tireless effort on defence and their ability to shoot the 3 point shot bodes well for the future.
