The Timaru Boys’ High School touch team showed a massive reversal of form to share the honours with St Andrew’s from Christchurch in their annual summer sports exchange.
The Timaru team lost their first game 7-1 to a better organised and fitter St Andrew’s team. Early in the second game, TBHS were down 2-0 and a similar result looked to be on the cards. However Jimmy Robertson and Jimmy Hill, the two smallest and youngest players in the team, stepped up and saw Timaru back into the game. The result at the end of normal time was 4-4 and the game went into extra time. Robertson proved the difference with the winning try sealing the game 5-4.
The Tennis proved just as close with the final result being a tie, but with STAC winning on count back of sets won. This is a very impressive result for TBHS as they have not come close to St Andrew’s for a good number of years. Again it was the junior players to the fore with Charlie Stock who came into the team at the last minute winning both his singles and doubles. Ryan McNulty and Tim Sheed also won their matches.
The 1st XI Cricket again struggled to perform in their interschool matches with a comprehensive loss to St Andrews. STAC batted first and compiled an impressive 278, James Copland taking 6 wickets and Sean Wills taking 4. In reply TBHS scored 50 in the 1st innings and after the follow on, scored 99 in their second innings. Charlie Martin the only scorer of note with a well compiled 29 lower down the order in the 2nd innings.
Overall, this was a very good display by touch and tennis but with a bit more work needing to be done by the cricketers.
