There were some one sided games at the annual Timaru Boys’/Waitaki Boys’ winter Sports Exchange but overall, the result couldn’t have been closer, ending in a 9-9 draw with Timaru Boys’ relying on the 1st XV win to tie the Exchange.
The 1st XI Hockey
saw a win, 4-0 to TBHS. The first half was a very closely contested match with
both sides having scoring opportunities but neither side being able to finish
things off. Late in the first half a ball picked up in the circle by Jacob
Parker was deftly flicked over the goalie for the first goal. The
second half saw things improve for Timaru with three more goals to Jono
Ellis, Tim Sheed and Jon Mechtold. Overall, it was a good
win with some strong defence shown by Tom Taiaroa and Sam Taylor.
The 1st XV Rugby team provided a strong finish to take out Waitaki 34-24 with tries to Kaleb Hunt-Wheeler and Ofa Manuofetoa in the last 10 minutes. This meant the team took back the O'Neill Trophy from Waitaki.
This was a hard fought game in front of an enthusiastic, capacity crowd at Alpine Energy Stadium. Timaru Boys’ started with a try to Thomas Mulligan that was converted by Monty Nixon. Mulligan converted a penalty before Isireli Kawa scored a try out wide which Mulligan again converted. Waitaki struck back to lead at half time by 19-17. Captain Cullen Grace scored early in the second half which was again converted by Mulligan. Waitaki drew level at 24, all before Timaru Boys’ pulled away at the end of the game. For Timaru Boys’, Thomas Edwards and Shane Fikken stood out in the forwards while Mulligan, Nixon and Brad Cvitanich were the pick of the backs.
The news was not so good for Timaru Boys' top Football side with the 1st XI losing to Waitaki for the first time in thirty years. The score was one all with five minutes to go, but it was Waitaki who finished the stronger with two goals in the last five minutes. Some poor defending by Timaru let Waitaki take the lead early before Harrison Marr struck back for Timaru. The home side squandered a number of chances during the game and didn't appear to want the game as much as Waitaki. The final score of 3-1 to Waitaki meant Timaru Boys' were unable to go through the interschool season unbeaten.
In the 2nd XV Rugby there was a comprehensive victory to Timaru, 38-17. Bradley Clucas was a standout in the forwards with a high work rate, while Sean Wills stood out in the backs. It was a mixed performance but Timaru always looked the better team.
There was another comprehensive 56-7 win for Timaru Boys’ in the U16 Rugby. Jack Mullany and Hayden McNulty both earned well deserved hat tricks. Hamish Schmack toiled well for the entire game with a high tackle completion, while Caleb McNoe certainly made an impact off the bench when introduced into the game.
In the forwards, Hamish Robertson defended well, while flankers Will Pudney and Harry Bampton were always a nuisance at the breakdown. Harri Adams was another player to stand out until injury forced him from the field.
It was a different story in the Colts Rugby with both the score and injuries going against the Timaru team. The Colts lost 47-14 as the score blew out at the end of the game. The team has suffered injuries in the last couple of weeks and this game was no different. The team toiled hard but struggled once they lost Jack Clayton, George Guerin and Jimmy Robertson to injury.
The U14 Rugby faced difficulty, keeping Waitaki to 22-19 at half time and then scoring a couple of late tries to make the final score a respectable 41-33. Try scorers were Darian Dysart (2), Jack Pudney, Seb van den Bosch and Jack Powell with Powell adding four conversions. For Timaru Boys’ Dysart, Jack Sands, Pudney, Jack Blakemore and George Mulder had good games in the forwards. Will Gibson, Jack Powell and Ryan Allan had their moments in the backs.
Timaru took out the Golf 2-1 with Jayden McDougall and Benjamin Crozier registering wins - Benjamin convincingly, while Jayden needed a clutch putt on the final hole to win the match for TBHS.
In the Junior Football, Bailey Chambers scored three goals in a 9-1 victory.William Rawlins read the game well and used his pace effectively while Ben Helliwell controlled well from the back.
The Trapshooting got underway in cold and blustery conditions that were not ideal. Waitaki are a polished unit and they performed well, winning by 269 to 247. Timaru’s top shooter was William Bishop who earned equal first top gun with Harry Simpson from Waitaki.
The Chess team led superbly by Haowai Cole took out a close encounter by 8-7 while the Debaters proved too strong for Waitaki with a 290-280 win by arguing the negative of the moot, “That New Zealand should give more aid to developing countries”.
Archery was a new sport in the exchange and we started well with a comprehensive victory by 2997-2710. Marshall Severinsen was top archer on the day.
Smallbore Shooting made a welcome return to the interschool competition with Waitaki taking it out by 741-672. Guy McDonald was the top shooter for Timaru.
In the Senior Basketball, Waitaki won 83-68 with solid performances from Timaru by Todd Phillips, Ben Aicken, Whawhaia Waa and James Watt.
The Junior Basketball lost 69-41 while the Squash team lost 2-1, with Captain Conor Prentice the only Timaru player to take the win.
With over 400 students participating from both schools, involved in eighteen events over twelve different sports on the day, this is a highly anticipated annual event in the life of the school.
