This event was held in Ashburton and well supported with twelve teams in the boys draw. Our team of Harry Hollyer, Hamish Murdoch and Stephen Garner was relatively inexperienced but potentially very competitive.
Round 2 was against the Waitaki Boys’ junior team and this time it was Harry who had the close match against a good C graded player. An early run of points for Harry gave him a buffer which he managed to hold on to in gaining a good win. This completed a 3-0 result and put us through to the semi-final against another WBHS team who we beat convincingly. Stephen Garner was most impressive in his structured and accurate squash against an older player who was eventually completely bamboozled. The final was against WBHS 1 who were an experienced team with three C graded players. Harry was outplayed by a very good Y13 student who had too much accuracy and power. Hamish competed early against their number 2, but was gradually worked out and worn out, thus giving WBHS an unassailable 2-0 lead and the trophy for 2016. Stephen came out with nothing to lose and played very consistent, and at times, patient squash to ensure a win for TBHS and thus a 2-1 match result.
The boys were very sporting and polite throughout the day and it was a positive experience for all involved. It is exciting to see squash building some depth again and particularly encouraging to have several boys committed to it as their primary sport.
