The Arts were celebrated at Timaru Boys’ High School recently with Arts Week giving boys the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of activities.
For many of the students it was a case of stepping outside their ‘comfort zone’ and discovering hidden talents. For others, it was a chance to refine their skills and work with experts in their field.
The carving of a ‘knowledge’-themed sculpture from a block of limestone was magnificent and designed by a group of boys under the guidance of Shaugn Briggs. It will be given pride of place outside Bull Block.
Working with the Timaru Wood Turners Club, a group of 10 boys showed their community spirit in making wig stands which will be donated to the Cancer Society.
Short story writing, ‘song bong’ African drumming, food art, calligraphy, physical theatre, wood carving, theatre sports, orchestral music, singing, felting, flax weaving, magic, bookmark monsters, miniature figurine painting and time-lapse photography all delivered a busy and engaging week for the boys. A sing-off amongst the Year 10 form classes also brought the week to a successful close.
Our thanks go to the following community experts for sharing their knowledge and working with the boys during the week: Author Owen Marshall, Ian Chapman (Otago University), Steve LeCorre (Aoraki Polytechnic), Timaru Wood Turners Club, Shaugn Briggs, Allison Gray, Rob Martin, Shay & Andie (Outwits), Rosemary Miller, Ken Newbitt, Dwayne Bloomfield, David Grace, Bill Watson and Russell Hendrie.
