The Timaru Boys’ Athletic Sports were held in warm, calm conditions at Aorangi Stadium on Friday 2 March.
In the Minor grade, Nick Webb and Saxon McNoe were prominent with two victories each on the track, but the overall champion was Reuben Bowen with wins in the High jump, Hurdles, Javelin and Long-jump.
The Junior Champion was Quinn Motley with titles in the 400 metres, Discus and Shot put as well as a second placing in the Javelin. Jed Symes in the sprints and long jump and Ryan Bagrie in the middle distance events both claimed three titles.
The Intermediate grade was dominated by the Rawlins twins with a clean sweep between them of all non-hurdle track events with William recording wins in the 100, 200 and 400 metres to go with the Javelin title thereby winning the intermediate title, and Peter claiming victory in the 800, 1500 and 3000 metres.
Dean Andrews with strong performances in the sprint and throwing events emerged as the Senior Athletics Champion. Bailey Gebbie in the middle distance events and the triple jump claimed four titles, William Valentine in the Discus and Javelin and George Guerin in the 3000 metres and open 2000 metre Steeplechase all claimed two senior titles. Guerin's time of 6 minutes 26.2 seconds in the Steeplechase was the day’s only record. Japanese exchange student Taiyo Watanabe followed in his idol Tom Walsh's footsteps by claiming the senior Shot-put title with a 14.36 metre effort.
A highlight was provided by Year 10 student Jed Syme edging out Andrews in the Open Champion of Champion 100 metre race in 11.6 seconds.
