Amid much dialogue and documentation around tracing and hygiene rules, winter sports are now allowed to return to the calendar this month.
In terms of our major winter codes, the 1st XI Football lead the field with the South Canterbury Senior Men's Competition kicking off on Saturday 13 June, with Juniors underway the following Saturday.
On Friday 19 June, the local Basketball competition gets underway and the 1st XI Hockey side begin their quest to defend the Canterbury Schools' 1st XI Championship in Christchurch. The Rugby 1st XV start their UC Championship the next day in Timaru against the highly rated Christ's College side.
For a number of the lower grade teams across the codes, their season will also start in late June with some warm up and grading games.
After a three month break that appeared to potentially threaten the winter sports season, this is a highly anticipated return to play, providing both a great social and physical outlet for our boys and community.
It is up to everyone to play their part with good decisions around the current and on-going rules around the Covid situation, ensuring the return to play remains a permanent one.
