On a recent trip to the University of Canterbury, our Year 12 Physics students had the opportunity of visiting Rutherford's Den, at the Christchurch Arts Centre.
Dynamic, interactive and activities-based, the programmes on offer at Rutherford's Den are inspired by the work of famous New Zealand scientist Ernest, Lord Rutherford. They provide students with access to tools, objects, exhibits, artefacts, expertise, and hands-on experiences that are not available in the immediate school environment.
Our young men learnt about Ernest Rutherford's discovery of the nucleus and had the rare opportunity to handle the only uranium available in NZ, using Geiger counters to calculate the radioactivity of different elements along with their half-life.
